May the Fourth be With You! 7 Star Wars Characters That Are Just like MSPs

This is the blog post you’re looking for!

In honor of it officially being Star Wars Day, May the 4th (not to be outdone by Tuesday, Revenge of the Fifth), we decided to put together a list of all the ways that MSPs are just like characters in the Star Wars saga. There’s a lot that the galaxy far, far away has in common with managed IT services, and just like the Star Wars franchise is set to grow massively this year in scope and profits, managed services will too.

So, grab your BlasTech E-11 blaster rifle, a hydrospanner, or that trusted lightsaber, and let’s take a look at the characters that are most similar to MSPs!

Obi-Wan Kenobi—No, you’re not some crazy old wizard who lives out past the Dune Sea. You’re a mentor, a trainer, a trusted advisor; a steadfast partner and friend that your clients can always count on. Perhaps you sit on the Jedi Council, or maybe you’re part of an MSP peer group. You’re also a fierce warrior, battling security flaws and restoring peace, justice, and backups to your client’s servers. Your nickname is “The Negotiator,” and while General Grievous coined the term for Kenobi, it’s because you’re closing deals left and right! You don’t need to use the Force to have powerful unseen resources at your disposal—your ally is the Network Operations Center, and it’s one with all of your managed services.

Boba Fett—Your clients are worth a lot to you! MSPs are just like the coolest bounty hunter ever (he is, not up for discussion). You’re always on the road traveling to meet clients and build your business, you have an array of cool technology at all times, and like Fett’s ship, the Slave-1, you go for verticals to blast your business off into hyperspace.

Han Solo—Never tell you the odds! With fully managed IT services, you always have the resources and skills needed to succeed, and you can take on anything. And like Han demonstrated in the Cantina with his showdown with Greedo, he’s proactive, just like you. You anticipate your clients’ needs and take out threats before they even happen. When your clients are satisfied and say they love you, you simply say, “I know.”

Lando Calrissian—You truly belong with us here among the clouds. That’s right, you old smoothie, you’re the administrator of Cloud City! Clients look to you to be a leader in moving their data to the cloud securely, and like tibanna gas mines, business is booming. Additionally, you have a select few trusted technicians, like Lando’s right-hand man Lobot, who are connected and proficient in NOC management. No one may know about your little maneuver at the battle of Taanab, but clients are confident that with you as an MSP, this deal is getting better all the time!

Chewbacca—Rawwwwwwrrrrrghghghghghgghg! RorrrrrrooaooaaoaoooWraaaargh. AWWrrrrfghhhhhmmmphhh—rawwwwwwwgggggrrrrrr; Owwwwwwwwwaaaaarrrrrrrrrrhggghhg.

Wedge Antilles—You don’t need special powers to deliver; you’ve got the know-how, skills, and leadership qualities to become a leader of your own Rogue Squadron, and lead them to victory every time. Wedge got to where he was through hard work and dedication. You don’t mind staying behind the scenes—you know your clients are focusing on their own Death Star sized problems. Managed services are for you—you work well with others and you’re not afraid to specialize—so whether it’s a Healthcare, Telco, OE, or flying an X-Wing—you’re going to provide the best services possible.

Bonus: The Break-Fixer

Watto—You’re working day in, day out, among husks of old equipment, and always overworked and underappreciated. Let’s face it—this isn’t ideal. No room to grow, and people aren’t exactly banging down the door for new business. Republic credits? Credit’s not good here—only money. You need something more real—just to keep the lights on. Better quit going to the Boonta Eve races and get started with managed services!

That’s it! Like Mace Windu says, this party’s over. Can you think of any other ways MSPs are like Star Wars characters?

If you end your training now -
if you choose the quick and easy path as Vader did - you will become an agent of evil...
