8 Ways to Reduce Your Technician Turnover Rate

Posted by Mary McCoy on March 3, 2017

Did you know that today is National Employee Appreciation Day? It’s a day for companies to thank and recognize their employees for their hard work throughout the year. In honor of this, we wanted to know what MSP business owners could do to appreciate their techs and reduce their turnover rate. We all know that employee turnover is a business killer in the IT industry, but why is that? Bottom line: there’s a shortage of IT talent and a widening skills gap.

In fact, there are about 593,500 IT jobs in the United States that have remained open for 90 days or longer. That equates to 50,000,000 days of lost IT productivity each quarter! So, what can be done about this? We turned to Spiceworks, a community of online IT professionals, to ask: What is one thing your boss could do to make your job more enjoyable? The influx of responses was astounding! After scanning the 64 (and counting) comments for common themes, we picked these eight ways to cut down on employee churn!

IT & MSPs: Does It Make Sense to Build It All Yourself?

Posted by George Bardissi on August 4, 2016

When I first started my MSP back in the early 2000’s the “guys” that were really progressive were renting data-center space, installing servers, managing the back-end and providing hosted solutions to their customers – all before the marketing term “cloud” even picked up traction. Back then, not many businesses were willing to go down this road on their own because it was a massive investment of time and capital. Moreover, ongoing labor was needed to make that happen, and many were still concentrated on on-prem solutions.

The cloud can be a mysterious and confusing concept, even for those in tech and IT services. And while there’s no denying the advantages presented by cloud computing, it’s not always easy to actually explain what the cloud is to colleagues, peers or potential customers.

To find out once and for all what the cloud actually is, our own Brody Rhombus hit the streets of Boston and asked people how they define it, how it works and how they’re using it. Not surprisingly, the responses were pretty mixed – and some were pretty hilarious. Tune in now to find out what we learned!

P.S. In reality, these people are no different than your clients and end users. What Do You Remember About Windows 95?

Posted by Mary McCoy on March 15, 2016

It's been over two decades since Microsoft released its groundbreaking Windows 95 OS on August 24, 1995. Since then, we've written love letters to Windows XP and popped Listerine tabs to get that awful taste of Windows Vista out of our mouths. We then resumed with Windows 7 and 8, skipped over 9 (why? what's the story here??) and are now adjusting to Windows 10. So since most of us have seen more operating systems than presidents in our lifetime, it's worth taking a look back at the release that put Microsoft on the map.

What do you remember about Windows 95? I asked various people here at Continuum, and here's what people of all ages and tech experience had to say!

The Difference Between a Leap Day and a Leap Second in IT

Posted by Lily Teplow on February 26, 2016

2016 is quite the eventful year! This summer the Olympic Games will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro, and in November we will have our Presidential election. With everything going on, it's almost as if the masterminds behind the Gregorian calendar knew we needed an additional day to make 2016 count.

Luckily, this year is also a leap year, meaning you have this Monday, Leap Day, as an extra day to finish the month out strong. Leap Day provides you with that much needed extra time to hit your sales and revenue numbers or cross another item off your monthly goals checklist. If you're concerned about any network configuration repercussions with the added time, not to worry. A leap day is very different than a leap second, which has caused some major IT issues in the past. Read on to learn their histories and how the two compare!

Ahhhh Unsend, UNSEND! Stories of Replyallpocalypse & Other Email Blunders

That dreaded Reply All button. If only there were some kind of app or plug-in that made people have to answer a challenging calculus problem in order to enable it. OK, maybe instead they should have to answer a series of questions, like "Do you really intend to send this message to the entire company?" followed by "Are you contributing anything of value to the other recipients on this listserv?" Don't get me wrong, Reply All has its uses, but it can also be terribly abused. Just look at how it's plaguing the inboxes of thousands of Time Inc. employees! And if you think it's just a workplace annoyance with no real harm, then these stories will make you think twice before sending your next email. We reached out to IT professionals and MSPs on Spiceworks, asking them to share their funniest and worst Replyallpocalypse moments, and they did not disappoint. As the weather grows colder, many of us become shut-ins. With the doors closed, windows shut, and everyone in one place – you are a sitting duck for risk of illness. The same goes for the office environment. We are all around each other, sharing documents, keyboards and workstations.

Did Mike wash his hands before sifting through that candy dish? We sure hope so, don’t we.

In any case, keep yourself clean.

Here on the blog, we typically write about how to prevent computer viruses and malware, but this time we're sharing four quick tips to help you and your clients stay healthy and as close to germ and bacteria free as possible. Be sure to download the white label version of these tips to include in your next email send to prospects and/or clients!

Are You Ready to Hire Your First Sales Rep?

Posted by Mike Barnes on January 11, 2016

At Navigate 2015, our annual MSP user conference held last September, I hosted a table topic on “How to Generate More Qualified Leads.” As with all other sessions at the event, each of our partners in the group asked relevant questions and passed along helpful advice to peers. I had hoped my contribution would be to share best practices for acquiring more high-quality prospects through various marketing campaigns and activities, thinking lead generation was the biggest challenge the group needed to overcome. And while finding leads without having to rely on referrals is often a struggle for MSPs, this particular conversation quickly switched gears, with attendees asking:

“Now that I have all these leads, what do I do with them?”

There is no value in having an endless supply of leads that never close into new clients. Your marketing efforts are useless if they don’t grow your customer base. That being said, you can't have all your employees solely focused on making the sale. Have you thought about hiring your first sales representative? If you're like the people at my table topics session, you may not know when the right time to do this is. As you continue to plan your growth and think about what your business will look like in 2016, consider these takeaways from our discussion.

The Growing Threat of Ransomware - Holding Data Hostage [POLL]

The Growing Threat of Ransomware - Holding Data Hostage [POLL]

"With upcoming new variants and the success of the “ransomware-as-a-service” business model, we predict that the rise of ransomware that started in the third quarter of 2014 will continue in 2016."

This prediction comes courtesy of the McAfee Labs 2016 Threat Predictions report and is particularly worth noting as MSPs head into the New Year. Many of you battled the CryptoLockers and CryptoWalls of 2015 and have the scars to prove it. But how do you compare to your peers as far as volume of attacks and level of threat prevention? Take our poll now!

How Star Wars Changed Real-World Technology Forever

For nearly forty years, the holidays have been intrinsically tied to Star Wars. Whether it was through watching movie marathons on TV or action figures under the tree, the galaxy far, far away always seems a little closer around this time of year.

This year, however, the world has a little more to look forward to this December, with the release of the first Star Wars motion picture in over ten years, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. On December 18, moviegoers worldwide will find out exactly what has been happening to characters like Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and Chewbacca, in the first sequel to 1983’s Return of the Jedi.

3 Ways to Sell Clients on the Benefits of Managed Services

Posted by Dan Kobialka on November 24, 2015

The managed services space is growing, and many businesses are well aware of the offerings provided by managed services providers (MSPs).

For example, CompTIA's "Fourth Annual Trends in Managed Services Study," released earlier this year, revealed more than two-thirds of companies said they used the services of an outside IT firm within the past 12 months. The study also showed that slightly more than half of respondents said they were "very familiar" with the concept of managed services, while another 40 percent said they were somewhat familiar.

4 Ways to Increase Your Laptop Battery Life and Charge

Posted by Matt Mainhart on November 18, 2015

My laptop goes everywhere with me, but unfortunately, my wall outlets do not. Maybe someday I will develop some sort of super power where I can charge laptops with energy from my fists. You know, that power that developed when I was struck by lighting that one time?

*hears crickets*

Anyway, none of us are superheroes. We rely on our portable machines to keep us super-productive while on the go, but without power, we are dead in the water - like Superman holding Kryptonite! How can we keep the juice to a maximum and ensure the health of our laptop batteries?

Battle the evil villains that are stealing your laptop juice. Check out these Quick Tips, and share them with your clients!

Why CyberSecurity Training Needs to Start at a Young Age

Posted by Raj Goel on November 16, 2015

As a business owner, you regularly deal with clients who unknowingly make dangerous mistakes with their data or technology. As a parent or adult, you also interact with kids and young people who face similar risks online.

There are some conversations you are having with your clients, colleagues and family members.

And there are some conversations you are NOT having with them…either because you don’t know how to raise the topic with them, or because you don’t feel it’s your place to talk about social media, online dating, or just plain human-stupidity that pervades our lives.

How MSP Business Owners Can Achieve Fast, Long Term Growth

Posted by Arlin Sorensen on November 3, 2015

Navigate 2015 was a fantastic conference with a lot of very relevant content for IT leaders. I particularly enjoyed the closing keynote by Verne Harnish, the Growth Guy, who shared his usual high-energy, hard-hitting and engaging expertise. Verne directed a number of his comments to the CEO/entrepreneur in the audience, striking a chord on two topics I see as challenges for many MSP business owners we consult with at HTG Peer Groups: business growth and sustainability.

How to Offer Disruptive Telecom Technology & Attract More Clients

Posted by George Bardissi on October 26, 2015

The abundance of telecommunications technologies available at our fingertips enables even the smallest of businesses to communicate at an enterprise level. That is, with the features afforded by today’s IP-enabled phone systems, business leaders can communicate faster, more frequently and over a myriad of channels.

As an IT/Managed Services Provider (MSP), you need to be able to cater to your customers with the technology that you offer. Imagine, a fledgling startup that needs to stay connected with its new slew of vendors, as well as maintain relationships with potential stakeholders. With a legacy PBX (that takes up dedicated office space and transmits phone calls over copper wires), this business owner might have significant trouble staying abreast of rapid updates and managing a large influx of calls and messages. One dedicated office phone line and an archaic receiver and dial pad isn’t enough to help this entrepreneur stay afloat.

Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.

Twenty-six years ago, I was shown a vision of the future, and it was amazing. At the tender age of 9, I looked at a world that was all neon and new and instantly found it wild, alien and exciting, and yet at the same time approachable, familiar and livable.

Of course, I’m talking about the seminal film Back to the Future Part II, the second film in an epic trilogy that spans 130 years and multiple generations of the McFly family, the fictional city of Hill Valley, California, and chronicles the adventures of one Doctor Emmet Brown. If you haven’t seen it, you probably should. Stop here, go watch it, and come back.

Your Solution Roadmap to the Cloud - Advice from Peers

Posted by Lisa Person on October 13, 2015

Changing your business model certainly isn’t easy. Those solution providers who moved to the cloud or added a cloud practice can validate the work and complexity required to do it successfully. Whether they were responding to their clients’ current (and/or future) needs or retooling to improve their own business prospects, the path can be a bumpy one.

Today’s VARs and MSPs have to be increasingly intuitive to survive in a highly competitive business environment where customers have so many choices and so many continually shifting priorities. That’s why cloud practices are so useful today, offering the flexibility providers and their clients need to thrive. Of course, those offerings need to be continually evaluated and adapted to ensure they’re successful.

8 Ways to Get Your Name Out There through Public Relations

Posted by Mary McCoy on October 7, 2015

How does the public view your company? Are you top-of-mind for your industry? According to Tracy Wemett, President and co-founder of BroadPR, MSPs cannot live without public relations (PR), especially since all IT is local. Maximizing your brand's visibility within your community helps attract new prospects and define your current customers' opinion of you. You may think it's optional and really only useful for enterprise businesses, but it's a necessity for any company, regardless of company size, production, or goals.

Last week at Navigate 2015, Tracy discussed the value of good PR in managed IT services and outlined the following best practices when crafting a plan.

5 Things from the 90s Tech World No One Misses

Posted by Joseph Tavano on October 6, 2015

Ah, the 90s—that glorious decade that started with the premiere of The Simpsons and ended with apocalyptic fears due to a system clock error. It was the decade in which we saw the promises of technology begin to change the world. Personal computers and mobile phones proliferated, music got industrial, and the Internet was born. It was an exciting time when everything seemed possible…no, that’s not quite right: everything seemed eventual.

We dreamed of the days of portable handheld devices where everything was connected and all the world’s information was at our fingertips. We also dreamed of hoverboards. These things happened, and it’s spectacular! But while there was so much to marvel at, there were plenty of things we were all happy to leave behind as time marched on. Let’s look at a few.

3 Fundamental Elements of Success in Managed IT Services

Posted by John Tippett on September 23, 2015

The managed services model has been revolutionary for IT integrators and clients alike. It affords much-needed financial stability through predictable, recurring revenue and provides an all-encompassing support platform for end clients. However, the MSP business model is only effective when it is well executed.

An MSP must know how to communicate value to clients. Relationships with vendors must be grounded in mutual trust, and a circle of influence that includes other successful MSPs should be established. With these things in mind, let’s take a closer look at three managed services best practices: selling solutions rather than products, buying only from vendors that understand your needs and stand behind you, and getting involved in partner communities.

Why Colleges Should Offer Techs a Course in End User Profiling

Posted by Mike Langlois on September 22, 2015

When people go to school to gain a degree in something IT-related, they mostly learn about logical answers to the how and why of technology. They learn that software is installed in a specific order. They learn that sometimes the difference between a working component and a non-working component is simply dependent of which driver they have installed. They learn languages, no I don’t mean German, French, Spanish or even Russian. I mean that they learn BASIC, C++, HTML, Perl, and Ruby. They learn Active Directory structures, GPO best practices, and the differences between security and distribution groups.

Hours upon hours are spent learning all of the intricate nuances of these subjects, yet rarely is there a single greenhorn that is fully prepared for the task ahead. I know it's shocking to think, yet I can promise you, that not one of these fresh graduates is fully prepared for the user. Be it a straight A honor roll student or the barely passed hooligan, that tech is not prepared to deal with the multiplicity of users they will be asked to support.

4 Steps to Help Keep Your Sanity in Managed Services

Posted by Lisa Person on September 21, 2015

No matter how much enjoyment you get from running your own business, everybody needs to escape once in a while. Routines get old and tiresome. The pressure associated with managing employees and dealing with difficult clients builds over time. Conversations, even those with the nicest business partners, tend to get stale. A little time away to “recharge the batteries” can be vital for the continued success of your organization and the sanity of your employees, the people who make it all happen. Repetition, no matter how pleasant it may seem, can be toxic to business owners' and employees' morale and concentration.

How the Right Antivirus Solution Keeps Your IT Services Stickier

Posted by Webroot Ghost Blogger on August 18, 2015

It goes by a lot of other names too—“customer retention,” “loyalty,” and “long-term patronage” are all bandied about—but the term “stickiness” has a ring to it that might resonate with MSPs. Being “sticky” connotes a bond between you and your customers, a connection that requires an overt effort on their part to break. Sometimes that bond can be broken in a single powerful tug, but very often it is just gradually chipped away at until it is...gone.

How to Adjust Your Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Software Settings to Avoid Downtime

Why the Secret to MSP Success Is Harnessing the Power of Peers

Posted by Arlin Sorensen on August 6, 2015

Peer groups are the rage in business today. They are the best tool a business owner can leverage to get relevant insight and understand what ‘good’ really looks like. Lots of options exist and many people are spending significant resources of time, money, and brain capital to participate. Is it worthwhile? At HTG, we believe it has the potential to be the most impactful thing that people can participate in. But the value is very dependent on folks doing a great job as peer coaches. In fact, if groups fail at that core level, it quickly loses value and causes consideration of whether it is a worthwhile investment or not.

Why Should They Buy from You? What Robin Robins Taught Me about Unique Selling Propositions (USPs)

While both of these agenda items were helpful, Robin's workshop on Unique Selling Propositions (USPs) was particularly relevant for growth-driven MSPs, especially as the market becomes increasingly saturated. The 4 Roles of the Modern MSP

Posted by Alan Berkson on July 28, 2015

The times, they are a changin’. When I look at my roles as an MSP and integrator at the turn of the century the equation for success started with selling solutions. In the SMB space, this consisted of file servers, email systems, and application and database servers for application software like Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Accounting, and other Line of Business (LOB) software. The old model value chain was driven by products and implementation. For me, as it was for most integrators, selling the hardware and software was a big ticket deal in itself. Even for small deployments, this could run into six figure invoices with nice margins. And, of course, you get to replace it all in 3-4 years when it’s slow, failing and outdated. Then there was the implementation and ongoing maintenance. Not a bad equation. Software-as-as-Service (SaaS) providers, by leveraging the economies of scale inherent in cloud infrastructure, have taken some wind out of the sails of the integration game. The game may have changed, but the fundamental success principles stay the same.

VIDEO: Why Robin Robins Thinks MSPs Struggle to Market their Businesses

Posted by Mary McCoy on July 23, 2015

VIDEO--Why-Robin-Robins-Thinks-MSPs-Struggle-to-Market-their-Businesses-Navigate-2015.png

Marketing. Managed IT Services. Marketing. Managed IT Services. No matter how hard you try, MSPs often can't get these two concepts to agree with one another. You haven't tried launching a marketing program either because you don't know where to start or you don't believe you have enough time to manage it. Perhaps you're even resistant to the idea because you're naturally distrustful of salespeople and marketers, and don't want to become one. Eeek the buzzwords! Whatever your reason is for struggling to build a solid marketing platform, you're not alone. Many MSP business owners have yet to incorporate a marketing strategy into their overall business plan. This is a colossal mistake.

No one understands this better than Robin Robins, the premiere marketing consultant, sales trainer, and author over 7000 MSPs, VARs and Solution Providers have worked with to implement scalable and profitable marketing programs that drives sales and growth for their companies. With her signature Technology Marketing Toolkit and fifteen years of experience serving the IT industry, Robin knows how to align MSPs' marketing endeavors with the time and resource constraints you're subject to. We're thrilled to feature her as a keynote speaker at Navigate 2015, our user conference in Las Vegas! To give you a little taste of what you can expect to learn from Robin at Navigate, she's created a series of videos we'll be sharing here on our blog!

First up, Robin explains the two mindsets of IT business owners and why she thinks MSPs run from marketing.

IT Buzzwords that Need to STOP!

Posted by Stephanie Moncayo on July 23, 2015

IT_Buzzwords_That_Need_to_STOP.jpg

Buzzwords, also known as pretentious jargon devoid of meaning, can easily drive anyone crazy! Although most users and administrators are familiar with Macbooks, Androids and Fitbits, few are actually familiar with the underlying technology that make their lives easier. Often, IT buzzwords are used to oversimplify the complex work that technicians, MSPs, and programmers do everyday. It's no wonder they're so frustrating. If you have ever had to explain to someone that "you're not an app designer [so do] not confuse the program that saves entire organizations on a daily basis with Snapchat," then you will certainly appreciate this post.

We're back with another IT Community post! We've again browsed online communities like Spiceworks and Reddit to find the most irritable buzzwords you wish would just die. After filtering through hundreds of responses, which might I add was very entertaining (big kudos to HardLuckMike for his own thread), I've narrowed it down to these few notorious buzzwords that make every person in the tech industry lose it. Enjoy!

3_Reasons_Why_MSPs_Should_Target_Healthcare_in_2016.jpg

As an MSP, you’re well acquainted with the daily challenges of managing your clients’ critical business solutions while also growing your own business. With the unrelenting grind to meet clients’ needs first, it’s sometimes only at industry events like Navigate that you have an opportunity to learn about new strategies that can help drive your business forward. Over the last year, I’ve focused my energies on growing my expertise in the healthcare field because of the increasing need healthcare providers now have to protect patient information due to the more stringent compliance requirements recently imposed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

As a growth-focused advisor to MSPs, here are the three key reasons why I view the healthcare industry as a major growth opportunity in 2016 and beyond:

Why Cloud Security Isn't Just an MSP Fad

Why Cloud Security Isn't Just an MSP Fad Webroot

MSPs accustomed to managing on-premise security solutions take note: your business is moving to the cloud.

Security in the cloud is growing steadily. Gartner Inc. predicts that the cloud-based security services market will grow to $3.1 billion in 2015, up from $2.1 billion last year. The company notes that growth in cloud security will “remain strong.” Market researcher Infonetics affirms that trajectory. The company states that cloud-based security service revenue will expand at a 10.8 percent compound annual growth rate through 2017, when the company projects the market will reach $9.2 billion.

How to Zoom in on a Niche and OWN It!

Posted by Andrew Moon on July 9, 2015

How_to_Zoom_in_on_a_Niche_and_OWN_It.jpg

Recently I had the opportunity to speak to a group of fellow entrepreneurs about how I started, grew and eventually sold my last business, Network Logix. Boiling the lessons learned down to a 1-hour presentation was a pretty daunting task when I started preparing. I did a lot of things right, and I also did a lot of things wrong. Mistakes are a powerful and sometimes cruel teaching tool. I only consider things to be a “failure” if I don’t learn anything from it. I learned a lot!

I've learned quite a lot over the last 10 years. In sharing these lessons, my hope is to save a fellow entrepreneur the pain and headache that I endured, and find success faster. In my last blog post, I discussed the daily distractions all MSPs face and shared my top three tips for a culture of ruthless productivity. In this next installment, I'll examine the value of targeting a niche market.

Using the Cloud for Scalability: So You Think You’re Secure…

Posted by Adrienne Merrick-Tagore on June 15, 2015

Most MSPs think they are providing their customers with a solid security posture by providing regular patch management, by using antivirus on endpoints, and by using firewalls to secure their customers’ networks. These are all necessary solutions, yes, but they require another layer of protection. Ideally, you’re ahead of the game and using RMM to operationalize your workflow and manage your customers’ IT. But the thing is, you need to proactively manage your security too. Firewalls and antivirus alone don’t cut it anymore.

Don't Let Clients Keep Prehistoric Systems.

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard that Microsoft is retiring updates and patching for any system using Windows Server 2003 and Server 2003 R2 come July 14th. Still, how many of your clients have yet to evolve by migrating to a newer server OS? Once it's gone, it's gone. You can't rely on Dr. Hammond to bring it back to life in the form of some cloned hybrid version. About a year since its EOL date, and you don't see a Windows XP Park anywhere on Isla Nublar, do you?

Learn what Microsoft's latest end of support means for MSPs, why your clients should take action NOW to avoid having a short window of time to complete the lengthy Windows Server 2003 migration and, how you can make this a smoother, painless process for them without exhausting your own tech resources.

Celebrating Tech Culture & Douglas Adams with Towel Day!

In the US, today is Memorial Day; a day where the nation pauses in solemnity to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

However, outside of the US, May 25 is also a very decorated day. Worldwide, there are numerous celebrations of all things national to novelty. It is Liberation Day in Lebanon, National Day in Argentina, Independence Day in Jordan, and Africa Day in the African Union. There is also Last Bell, National Tap Dance Day, and Geek Pride Day—all of which are held annually on May 25.

There is one other holiday that occurs on May 25 every year. The curious commemoration has been known since 2001 as Towel Day, and celebrates the life and work of writer and tech-culture “patron saint” Douglas Adams. Adams is most notably known for his Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series of radio plays, film, television, book trilogy (in five parts), and more.

How to Sell Your Clients on Antivirus Services

Posted by George Anderson on May 21, 2015

When it comes to approaching prospects to discuss security and AV, they will generally have a poor opinion and a number of significant issues around their existing solution. But, if you treat that initial discussion like a feeds and speeds technical argument, the overall high apathy around AV coupled with the belief that solutions are ‘all the same,’ is going to get you nowhere.

Instead, you need to take the customer's perspective and explore the issues they are having with their endpoint security - especially if you’re going to manage it for them or offer them your services. In order to get the sale, you have to be able to position and relate what you can do for them - against what business and operational issues they already have.

The Current State of Encrypting Ransomware

Posted by Tyler Moffitt on April 29, 2015

The_Current_State_of_Encrypting_Ransomware.jpg

I’m sure we’re all familiar with what encrypting ransomware is at this stage in 2015. Cryptolocker started it all in late 2013 and many copycats followed, improving regularly and reaping hundreds of millions in revenue in 2014. The “business model” hasn’t changed much since its debut – all current variants will infect, encrypt and then ransom as the standard procedure. The typical infection vector of attack is Zeus phishing because the average user has proven to be susceptible to this type of attack due to the immense amount of social engineering that goes into it. We’re going to actually look at what a user will see with Zeus-dropped malware, examining five of the most recent, malicious manifestations.

Patching is an incredibly important service that MSPs provide to their clients. In fact, it can even be used as a differentiator between your services versus your competition. On this episode of MSPradio, we chat with Joel Kennedy, Director of Technical Account Management at Continuum and Shauna Peters, Technical Account Manager at Continuum, to discuss patching best practices and how MSPs can use them to improve their overall quality of service to their clients.

These are the so-called “Covered Entities” that must comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

The IT world has been rocked by a number of recent vulnerabilities and security lapses. The Heartbleed bug, discovered in April in OpenSSL code. The sudden demise of TrueCrypt, an open-source encryption solution. A serious flaw in the widely used Internet Explorer browser, which caused the Department of Homeland Security’s Computer Readiness Team to release an unusual imperative, and Microsoft to issue an out-of-cycle security update. Each incident reinforces the need for more vigilant protection of computers, networks, and systems. The solution is simple: we need proactive IT maintenance and monitoring.

MSPradio Episode 8: The Help Desk Dilemma for MSPs

Posted by Nate Teplow on June 11, 2014

Episode8-logo2

A service desk (a.k.a help desk) is critical for an MSP's success. Your clients will need someone to call when something goes wrong. The problem is that maintaining a full service desk is a business of its own. You need to be available 24/7, call volume can be incredibly volatile and it's difficult to find and retain top talent. Ultimately, maintaining a help desk in-house isn't scalable for MSPs.

On this episode of MSPradio, we chat with Jacque Rowden, Director of Continuum's Help Desk, as well as Bryan and Bob Sullo from Clocktower Technology Services to discuss the help desk dilemma for MSPs and how you can find success with an outsourced help desk solution.

How MSPs Can Take Advantage of Windows XP’s End-of-Support

Posted by Nate Teplow on April 16, 2014

windows-xp-opportunityA week has passed since Microsoft’s end-of-support (EOS) deadline for Windows XP; and if you haven’t upgraded to a newer operating system yet, you may have realized that, well, not much has changed.

Despite being referred to in many cases as XP’s “end-of-life,” the reality is that post-EOS computers running XP will still work – but critical functions like security, backup and recovery must now be managed entirely in-house by businesses leveraging the nearly 13-year-old operating system. Additionally, XP compatibility for emerging hardware and software solutions will decline steadily as developers continue to focus on Windows 7 and 8.

These scams can be fairly simple, yet very effective at duping the user and capturing their private information. Even the slightest clue to a username and/or password can give hackers all they need to break into private systems and steal information from companies and individuals – and for this reason it’s crucial to be aware of phishing schemes, tactics and best practices for avoidance.

The Spam Battle Report 2014

Posted by Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols on March 31, 2014

Let’s start with the good news: According to Kaspersky, in 2013, the proportion of spam in email flows was 70%, which is 2.5 percentage points lower than in 2012. The bad news is that spam that does get through is far more dangerous. According to John Levine, chairman of the Internet Research Task Force's Anti-Spam Research Group (ASRG) and president of the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial E-mail, "The ongoing threat is that spam is now essentially 100% criminal, and it's as likely to try to plant bank-account-stealing malware either directly or via links to compromised websites as to sell you something." Benefits of Using an Integrated RMM and NOC Platform
